Relinquishing Your Fears to God

Relinquishing Your Fears to God

During a recent meeting of my monthly Bible study, the 5:7 Club, we did an activity that some may find a bit unsettling.

The ladies and I all took turns naming our fears.

Many of the worries expressed related to health concerns, loved ones, and an uncertain future.

For me, I often feel anxious about the unknown.

You may be wondering, what exactly was the goal of this exercise?

While pursuing my master’s in counseling, I recently learned about the power of naming our feelings.

When we take time to identify those emotions that often go unnoticed, it can actually lessen control over our thoughts and actions.

Furthermore, it allows us to refocus our attention not on what makes us afraid, but on the most powerful influence in our lives, Jesus Christ.

The cross over a sunrise.

When we name our fears and relinquish their control over us, it reminds us of the power of our Savior’s name.

In Philippians 2, Paul paints a beautiful picture of Jesus’ compassion, kindness, and sacrificial nature.

He also explains how our Savior humbled Himself on earth for our sake.

Despite His humble and gentle nature, Christ is all-mighty and can change even the hardest of hearts.

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

(Phillipians 2:9-11, ESV)

If you are feeling afraid today, take the time to acknowledge that fear.

However, resist the temptation to dwell in this place of worry and anxiety.

Instead, dwell in the power, courage, and strength that lies within the name of Jesus!
