How Do We Work as a Team with God?
During my training with my guide dog, Jackson, one of the first things we learned how to do was to work around obstacles.
The trainers would set up traffic cones, large solid barriers, and other objects on the sidewalk to block our path.
The dogs are trained to stop in front of the obstacle, and then as a team, the dog and handler are to decide the best way to work around the object.
The first few times Jackson and I worked on this task; it was pretty much a disaster. I would give him the wrong command and completely confuse him. Or he would take matters into his own paws, guiding me on his own “creative” path around the obstacle.
It took a lot of practice, trust, and teamwork for us to finally become comfortable working together around these unexpected barriers.
I was a guest at a Bible study meeting recently where one of the ladies proposed the notion that when we face obstacles in life, we have to work as a team with God in order to move past them.
These obstacles are much more troublesome than a set of traffic cones blocking the sidewalk.
They can present themselves as an unexpected sickness, a financial strain, or a looming decision regarding your career.
These situations can make us feel as though the road ahead of us is completely blocked, and we may not see any way to get to the other side.
Thankfully, when the road ahead becomes unclear, God is always there to guide us.
So, how can we work with God as He works on our behalf? How can we work as a team with God?
In Matthew 17, the disciples were facing their own problem which they could not seem to work around. A father had brought his son to them to be healed, and, no matter how hard they tried, the disciples were not successful. After Jesus drew out the demon that plagued the child, the disciples asked him why they were not able to solve the problem themselves.
This is how Christ replied:
“He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.’”
(Matthew 17:20, ESV)
Jackson, my guide dog, wants to work for me, guide me, and keep me safe, but I have to trust him in order for this relationship to work. Likewise, in order for God to move the mountains in our lives, we have to have faith.
Working as a team with God means that we trust Him fully, we turn to Him always, and we remain obedient as we follow the path on which He leads us.
Just like a small, minuscule mustard seed has the potential to grow into a ginormous, grand plant, it is even more amazing what God can do with a small act of faith.
He can give you the clarity to make that hard decision, give you peace and courage through your health battle, and even remove these mountains from your path altogether.
Trust Him with all of your obstacles today and watch as your steps become more and more clear with every small act of faith.
