Putting on the New Self for the New Year
I used to love rearranging the furniture in my bedroom when I was younger.
My parents were constantly hearing noises of furniture being rolled or scraped across the floor above their heads. I have had to let this beloved pastime go since losing my sight.
Honestly, rearranged furniture is now one of my worst nightmares!
It would take me forever to get used to the changes, and thinking about all of the accompanying bumps and bruises makes me cringe!
But I used to love how simply changing the arrangement of the furniture could make an old room feel brand new.
When we enter into a new year, many of us find ourselves grasping for ways to make ourselves feel new as well.
We promise to change our diets, our habits, and our actions.
We make resolutions in which we strive to let go of the old, and usher in the new and improved.
In Ephesians 4, we can read about a change that does not occur at midnight once a year, but when we come to know Christ.
“To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
(Ephesians 4:22-24, ESV)
Who exactly is this new self?
When we come to know Jesus as our savior, we are given the opportunity to break with our past and turn in a whole new direction.
The “new self” can be thought of as the new form we take on as we begin to be led by the Holy Spirit instead of by our own desires.
Whereas living by the desires of our “old self” may lead us into bitterness, anger, and separation from God (Ephesians 4:31), when we put on the “new self,” we are led by kindness, tender-heartedness, and forgiveness (Ephesians 4:32). Thus we begin living more like Christ.
Honestly, I cannot think of a better resolution!
This year, I challenge you to make the most important change of all…choosing to break with your past and move forward with our Savior as your guide.
Only when you know Jesus can you put off your old self marred by sin, and put on the new self, which brings promises of salvation, hope, and a glorious eternity.
