Seeking God When You're Burnt Out

Seeking God When You're Burnt Out

I honestly can’t believe I’m writing this, but happy May!

This year is seriously flying by so fast, and it has been a whirlwind for me.

Between speaking engagements, graduate school, family life, and other responsibilities, it seems as though I hardly have time to eat, breathe, or sleep!

Can any of you relate? Are you in a season that is so busy that you simply cannot find the time to slow down?

A clock on a white wall signifying time passing.

I am ashamed to say that, honestly, making time for God has been a struggle in this season for me.

I find myself becoming so distracted by my to-do list, obligations, and deadlines that all of a sudden, it’s the end of the day, and I haven’t even had my quiet time with Him yet.

I know in my heart, however, that He should be my first priority.

With Him in the forefront, all other steps through those busy moments will become clearer and easier to navigate.

How can we give our all to God when we feel as though we have nothing left to give to our jobs, our families, or even ourselves?

The following passage from 1 Kings 17 gave me a lot of hope during my busy season.

In this chapter, God instructs Elijah to go visit a widow.

The Bible open in front of a glass window.

“Then the word of the Lord came to him, ”Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” (1 Kings 17:8-9 ESV)

This woman was very poor, and in the midst of a famine, did not have much to give.

In fact, she was preparing to use the last of her resources to feed herself and her son a final meal.

Despite telling Elijah of her dim circumstances, the prophet responded by saying:

“Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first, make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’” (1 kings 17:13-14 ESV)

The woman was obedient and poured out all that she had, all the while trusting that, as Elijah said, God, in His powerful way, would provide for her…and that is exactly what He did!

“And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that He spoke by Elijah.” (1 Kings 17:15-16 ESV)

So, on those days when I feel so busy, burnt out, and tired that I feel as though I have nothing left to give, I pray that God will help me to pour out what I do have, even if it is just a drop.

Because I know in God’s hands that one drop can grow into an ocean of blessings and possibilities.

How can you pour out all that you have for God today?
