Seeking Deliverance from Our Fears

Seeking Deliverance from Our Fears

I will never forget the very first time that I took a trip on my own after losing my sight.

I was preparing to fly to Michigan to receive orientation and mobility training at Leader Dogs for the Blind.

This organization does not only provide guide dogs to people who are blind or visually impaired, but they also teach such individuals how to navigate the world using a white cane (orientation and mobility training). This was the reason I was traveling there in 2016.

I had barely been blind for a year, and this would be the first time I would be taking a trip on my own since losing my sight.

An airplane flying through a sky full of clouds.

Needless to say, I was terrified.

I remember the night before I was supposed to leave, as I was packing my suitcase, I collapsed into tears and told my mom that I was too scared, and I wanted to stay home.

My mom, being the voice of reason, knew that, despite my fear and uncertainty, this trip was very important for me. If I ever wanted to learn how to travel independently and efficiently without my sight and gain back my independence, I had to put my fear aside.

But this is much easier said than done.

When we feel paralyzed by fear and unequipped to face it, it can lead us to miss out on opportunities, blessings, and joy.

Have you ever been tempted to allow a scary situation to keep you from moving forward?

Thankfully, in these situations, there is always somewhere we can turn to find the courage to take those first steps forward.

Psalm 34:4 says,

“I sought the Lord, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.”

Our mighty God is a never-ending source of courage, support, and strength.

A sunset with a rainbow with text that says, “Our mighty God is a never-ending source of courage, support, and strength. “

In order to continually tap into these resources, we must also continually seek Him.

It does not mean that he will take us out of the scary situation, but when we face our fear through reliance on God, there is no doubt that we will be able to tackle what once seemed impossible.

With the encouragement of my family and the courage that came from constant prayer, I was able to board that plane to Michigan.

Today, because of that decision, I am more independent and confident than ever with my orientation skills and my guide dog by my side.

How are you seeking God through your fear today?
