Day 1: Darkness to Light

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” Genesis 1:3

In the first chapter of the Bible, we learn much about God, His power, and His plan. When God began His masterpiece in this account of creation, Genesis 1:2 reads that “The Earth was formless and darkness covered everything.”

Before losing my sight in 2015, I could have described myself in a similar way, and I think a lot of us can relate to this description at some point in our lives. I was raised as a Christian, but I did not truly know God. I was guilty of simply going through the motions with my “faith” at the time if you can even call it faith. I was very lost. The lack of a real relationship with God really took a toll on me in college. I succumbed to the party scene, the need to be popular, and the desire to be known for my worldly accomplishments and possessions. I was formless and covered in darkness and sin.

Isn’t it ironic that I didn’t find the light of God’s holy power until my world went dark?

Just like God separated darkness and light into day and night, I was separated from Him by the darkness and sin in my life. However, after going blind at age 20, I yearned for His light, His mercy, and His guidance, because I knew it was the only way I would be able to face my blindness.

As my relationship with Christ grew, I began to realize that, just as God had a perfect plan for creation, He also had a plan for me. As God created day, night, seas, land, and all of the other wonderful creations, He took His time. He had a perfect plan, building each new creation on the one before it. He even rested when He needed to!

Remember this: When you are facing darkness, turmoil, or hardships in your own life, God always has a plan.

He can always make something out of nothing. He made the Earth from a dark, formless abyss, so He can surely take whatever situation you are facing today and create a beautiful blessing.

Think About It: What are the dark parts of my own life? How can I take these dark parts and turn them into light for your glory?

Pray About It: “Lord, please help me to remember the mighty power you possess to create change. I pray that you will take the dark parts of my life and create light for your glory alone.”
